No cannabis strain is proven to make you laugh, and there is very little research on why cannabis makes some people giggly at all. What does exist is review data. On Leafly, consumers tag the effects they felt, and “giggly” is one of the tags. Of the 20 strains this page has long listed, six have giggly among their three most reported effects: Laughing Buddha, Pineapple Express, Cherry Pie, Mango Kush, Lemon Haze and Purple Haze. Three of those six were on licensed New York City dispensary menus when we read 32 of them on Oct 8, 2026.

The 20 strains, checked against reviews and NYC menus
This table takes the 20 strains this page has long listed as giggly and checks each one twice: against the three most reported effects on its Leafly page, and against the 32 licensed NYC dispensary menus we read on Oct 8, 2026. Leafly shows only the top three effects, so a “No” means giggly is not in the top three, not that nobody reported it.
| Strain | Type on Leafly | Top reported effects on Leafly | Giggly in top three? | NYC menus (of 32) | NYC menu price (per eighth unless noted) |

| Mango Kush | Hybrid | Giggly, hungry, happy | Yes | 0 | Not on menus |
| Lemon Haze | Sativa | Giggly, talkative, happy | Yes | 0 | Not on menus |

| Jack Herer | Sativa | Focused, energetic, creative | No | 15 | $22 to $45 |
| GSC (Girl Scout Cookies) | Hybrid | Relaxed, hungry, happy | No | 8 | $25 to $32 |
| Green Crack | Sativa | Energetic, focused, talkative | No | 2 | $22 |
| Durban Poison | Sativa | Focused, energetic, uplifted | No | 10 | $25 to $56 |

| Chemdawg | Hybrid | Euphoric, relaxed, tingly | No | 7 | $32 to $35 |
| Trainwreck | Hybrid | Euphoric, uplifted, creative | No | 3 | $45 for a quarter ounce |
| Blue Dream | Hybrid | Creative, euphoric, happy | No | 23 | $25 to $52 |
| Super Silver Haze | Sativa | Energetic, uplifted, focused | No | 5 | $40 to $48 |
Two things stand out. Most of the famous “laughing” strains, including Sour Diesel, Jack Herer and Blue Dream, are tagged energetic, uplifted or creative, not giggly. And the strain most tagged giggly, Laughing Buddha, was not on a single NYC menu.
More strains reviewers tag as giggly
Leafly keeps its own list of strains tagged giggly, with several hundred entries. Laughing Buddha leads it, followed by names such as Chronic, Cake Pop, Skittlez Mintz, Pink Runtz and Sundae Driver. Of those, Pink Runtz was on 4 of 32 NYC menus at $44 to $53 per eighth.
Three strains we have profiled also carry the tag. Leafly reviewers describe Jealousy as giggly, relaxed and talkative, and it was on 4 NYC menus. Gas Runtz reviewers report energetic, creative and giggly. Retailers describe the common Truffle Shuffle as creative, relaxed and giggly.
Why does weed make you laugh?
The short answer is that nobody has pinned it down. Leafly’s own explainer on the question concedes there is a shortage of clinical trials. The academic literature is mostly descriptive: a 1996 paper in European Psychiatry, titled “Cannabis, mind, and mirth”, discusses intoxication and mood, and a 2003 review of 30 studies in Drug and Alcohol Review found that relaxation is the most commonly reported effect of cannabis, with wide variation between people.
The practical point is that the effect is not a property of the strain alone. Dose, tolerance, mood and company all change how the same flower lands, and higher doses of THC can bring anxiety instead of laughter. If you want an evening of laughing with friends, a moderate dose in good company matters more than the name on the jar. Our THC calculator turns a label percentage into milligrams.

Before you hand over money anywhere, confirm the shop is licensed. Run its name through our New York dispensary license checker, which reads the state license list, or check the Office of Cannabis Management dispensary location verification page. Unlicensed storefronts are not bound by New York testing and labeling rules, so the name on their jar is unverified in every sense.

Correction, Oct 9, 2026: an earlier version of this page cited survey figures on cannabis and laughter and a “2010 study” that we could not verify; the linked paper was a study of rats unrelated to laughter. Those claims have been removed, and the strain list is now checked against review data.
