Piff Strain NYC: Meaning, History and Where to Buy

Piff is New York slang for a style of incense-scented haze, not a single cultivar. The name came out of Upper Manhattan and the Bronx in the late 1990s and 2000s, and the same flower is also called Uptown Haze or NYC Haze. No flower named Piff was on the 32 licensed New York City dispensary menus we read on Oct 8, 2026, but Uptown Haze was on 2 and NYC Haze on 1.

Piff is the most New York thing on this list, and the hardest to pin down. It is not a cultivar with a breeder and a seed line. It is a name uptown gave to a particular kind of haze, and for most of its life it described a smell and a reputation rather than a plant you could buy by name.

What Piff actually means

In New York, Piff refers to an incense-forward haze: tall, airy, spear-shaped buds with a long flowering time and a distinctive church-like smell. The name circulated in Upper Manhattan and the Bronx, with Washington Heights and Inwood coming up repeatedly in oral histories, and it spread through delivery services and street networks from the late 1990s through the 2000s. Older names for roughly the same thing include Uptown Haze, Dominican Piff and, memorably, that church.

This was all before lab testing, so the name did a job that a certificate of analysis does now. If someone said they had piff, they were making a claim about aroma and strength, and you checked it with your nose.

Genetics, to the extent anyone knows

There is no agreed parentage. The hypotheses point at haze lines, possibly Northern Lights crossed with Haze or a Congolese haze, with West and Central African tropical genetics somewhere upstream and later outcrosses to Northern Lights or Skunk. None of this is documented.

The useful way to think about Piff is as an archetype rather than a cultivar, which also means two products labeled Piff in a licensed shop can be different plants.

Aroma and flavor

Frankincense first, which is where the church nickname comes from, then cedar, black pepper and dry lemon peel. It is a drier, sharper, more perfumed smell than the fuel-forward diesels. Reported terpene profiles lean on terpinolene, supported by ocimene, caryophyllene and pinene.

THC and what to expect

Modern cuts sold under the name in legal markets generally test somewhere in the mid-teens to low twenties for THC. Classic haze is not usually the heaviest flower on the shelf by percentage, which surprises people who know the reputation. The haze on NYC menus in October 2026 was labeled higher, at 28% for Uptown Haze and 35% for NYC Haze, so read the jar.

Consumers describe the effect as bright, talkative and distinctly cerebral rather than physically heavy, with a fast onset. Higher doses are more often described as edgy than sleepy. Again, that is how people report it, not a guarantee; haze-dominant plants have a long-standing reputation for being uncomfortable for people prone to anxiety, so this is a strain to approach slowly.

Our THC calculator will turn the label percentage into milligrams if you want to be deliberate about the dose.

Where to buy Piff in New York

On Oct 8, 2026 none of the 32 licensed NYC dispensary menus we read listed a flower called Piff. The name survives under its older aliases. Uptown Haze, from the grower Major, was at Lenox Hill Cannabis Co. in Manhattan and All Good Cannabis Dispensary in Brooklyn at $53 to $54 per eighth, labeled 28% THC. NYC Haze, from the grower Smoke, was at Two Buds Dispensary in the Bronx at $40 per eighth, labeled 35%. Twenty-five haze-named strains were on those menus in all; our NYC weed strains database lists them.

Because the name describes an archetype, treat the label as a starting point: look for a terpinolene-dominant terpene profile on the certificate of analysis, which is the closest thing to an objective test of whether you are getting the real article.

Long flowering times make true haze expensive to grow, so genuine examples tend to carry a premium. A cheap jar marked Piff is usually something else.

Before you hand over money anywhere, confirm the shop is licensed. Run its name through our New York dispensary license checker, which reads the state license list, or check the Office of Cannabis Management dispensary location verification page. Unlicensed storefronts are not bound by New York testing and labeling rules, so the name on their jar is unverified in every sense.
