Ask anyone who was buying weed in New York in the 1990s what the city smelled like, and you will hear the same two words: Sour Diesel. No cultivar is more tied to New York, and almost none has a murkier paper trail.
Where Sour Diesel actually comes from
The honest answer is that nobody can prove it. Sour Diesel is generally traced to the East Coast in the early-to-mid 1990s, and the New York City area is the most commonly named birthplace, but there is no documentation. The strain predates legal markets, record-keeping seed banks and lab testing, so what survives is oral history.
The lineage is contested in the same way. The most repeated version crosses Chemdawg 91 with Super Skunk. Other accounts name Northern Lights, OG Kush, a Mexican sativa or Skunk #1 as the second parent. The Ontario Cannabis Store, a government retailer with no stake in the legend, calls the Chemdawg 91 side widely believed and the second parent uncertain. Verilife goes further and says the origin story is still a mystery.
Treat any confident Sour Diesel origin story, including the popular one, as folklore. What is not in dispute is that the strain became a New York staple and spread outward from there.
Aroma and flavor
Sour Diesel is named for exactly what it smells like: sharp fuel, the way a service station smells in August. Under the solvent note there is citrus peel, something earthy and skunky, and a peppery bite on the exhale. It is a loud strain. The jar announces itself across a room, which is part of why it built a following in a city where people buy by nose.
Lab panels on licensed New York menus usually put caryophyllene, limonene and myrcene near the top, with pinene and linalool in some cuts. Terpene results move around between growers, so two jars with the same name can read differently.
THC and what to expect
Sour Diesel is usually quoted at 18% to 26% THC, with negligible CBD. The labels on New York City menus run higher: 21% to 32% across the 15 menus that carried it on Oct 8, 2026. That is the stronger end of the flower you will find in a licensed shop.
Consumers generally describe the experience as quick and heady rather than sedating, which is how it earned a daytime reputation. That is a pattern in how people talk about it, not a promise of how it will land for you. Potency cuts both ways: higher-THC flower is likelier to produce an uncomfortable edge, including anxiety or a racing heart, particularly for people who do not consume often. Start with a small amount and wait.
If you want arithmetic rather than vibes, our THC calculator turns a label percentage into milligrams per serving.
Where to buy Sour Diesel in New York
Sour Diesel is one of the easiest strains to find in the city. On Oct 8, 2026 we read the public flower menus of 32 state-licensed NYC dispensaries, and Sour Diesel was on 15 of them, level with Jack Herer and Permanent Marker and behind only Blue Dream. Menu prices ran from $22 to $55 per eighth, and 14 growers supplied it, among them Ithaca Cultivated, Nanticoke, Rize and Left Coast. These shops listed it:
- Manhattan: Alta Dispensary, Carnegie Hill Cannabis, Good Company, Lenox Hill Cannabis Co., Nicklz, The Travel Agency, Union Square
- Brooklyn: Animo, Flower Daddy, Kushmart, Verdi Park Slope
- Queens: CannaBees, Flower Power Dispensers, Kushie, Vaporize
- The Bronx: Two Buds Dispensary
Named regional cuts were on menus too: Albany 1996 Sour Diesel on 3, and Amherst Sour Diesel and Super Sour Diesel on 2 each. The live entry, with links to each shop, is under Sour Diesel in our NYC weed strains database. Stock rotates weekly by cultivator, so no directory can promise a specific jar is on the shelf today. Check the shop menu or call ahead.

Before you hand over money anywhere, confirm the shop is licensed. Run its name through our New York dispensary license checker, which reads the state license list, or check the Office of Cannabis Management dispensary location verification page. Unlicensed storefronts are not bound by New York testing and labeling rules, so the name on their jar is unverified in every sense.
