Walk into a licensed shop in Williamsburg or on the Upper West Side and the jars on the wall come from a few dozen names. Some are family farms in the Finger Lakes and the Southern Tier, some are New York arms of national companies, and some are city-born brands that contract with licensed growers. Every brand sold in a licensed New York dispensary must be grown and processed in New York State by licensed businesses, and every package carries the state’s universal symbol and a lab test link.

Who makes New York’s legal weed?
Three kinds of companies make the brands on NYC shelves:
- New York farms and greenhouses. Most of the first licenses went to hemp farmers in 2022. Florist Farms in Cortland sold the first legal adult-use product in the state on Dec 29, 2022, at Housing Works Cannabis Co. in Manhattan. Nanticoke grows in a mixed-light greenhouse in Endicott, and ElectraLeaf in the Ithaca area.
- National operators with New York licenses. Find and Grassroots are both Curaleaf brands, sold through Curaleaf’s New York registered organization. Bouket belongs to ACE Venture, which bought a majority of Vireo Health of New York in 2026.
- Brand companies that contract with licensed processors. City and out-of-state names such as Doobie Labs, Preferred Gardens and To The Moon sell flower made by licensed New York processors.
You can look up any licensed cultivator or processor in the state’s Current OCM Licenses data.
How to read a New York cannabis label
- Universal symbol: the state’s THC warning symbol means the product is regulated.
- License numbers: the processor and sometimes the cultivator license appear on the package; they match the state data.
- THC: NYC labels mostly read 25% to 30%. The median across our 12 brands ran from 25% (ElectraLeaf) to 30% (Grassroots).
- Lab results: a QR code or link leads to the certificate of analysis.
- Harvest or packaged date: fresher flower smells stronger; ask if the date is not on the label.
