Edible THC Calculator

NY cannabis guide › Edible calculator

To estimate the THC in a homemade edible, multiply the grams of flower by the THC percent on the label and by 10 to get milligrams, multiply by how much of it reaches the butter (about 60% at best for a home batch), then divide by the number of pieces. Seven grams of 20% flower in a pan of 24 brownies works out to about 35 mg a brownie, three and a half times New York’s 10 mg serving. For a store-bought edible, divide the package total by the number of pieces.

Work out the THC in your edibles

Pick a mode. Homemade batch works out the THC in cannabutter or oil and in each piece you cut, and tells you how much infused butter to use for a target amount per piece. Split a store-bought edible tells you how much of a gummy, chocolate or cookie from a licensed dispensary gets you a given number of milligrams. Nothing you type leaves your device.

How much of the THC makes it into the butter?

THC in the flower1,400 mg
In the whole batch of butter840 mg
Per teaspoon of butter17.5 mg
Per piece35 mg3.5 times a New York serving (10 mg)

For 5 mg a piece across 24 pieces you need 120 mg in the recipe: about 6.9 teaspoons (2.3 tbsp) of this butter, with plain butter for the rest.

How the calculator works

The math has four steps. The calculator shows each one so you can check it.

StepFormulaExample
THC in the flowergrams × THC % × 107 × 20 × 10 = 1,400 mg
THC that reaches the butterflower THC × transfer rate1,400 × 0.6 = 840 mg
THC per teaspoonbutter THC ÷ teaspoons (48 in a cup)840 ÷ 48 = 17.5 mg
THC per pieceTHC in the recipe ÷ pieces840 ÷ 24 = 35 mg

New York labels give total THC, which already counts the THCA in the flower at the rate it converts when heated. If a label lists only THCA, multiply it by 0.877 first, because the molecule loses weight when it turns into THC. The checkbox in the calculator does that for you. Our THC calculator does the same first step for flower you smoke.

The reverse question, how much butter to use for a set amount per piece, runs the same steps backward: target milligrams times pieces, divided by the milligrams in a teaspoon of your butter. Use plain butter for the rest of the recipe so the texture does not change.

Worked examples: cannabutter made with 1 cup of butter

All rows assume flower labeled 20% THC, 1 cup of butter, the 60% best-case transfer rate and the whole cup going into the pan.

FlowerTHC in flowerIn the butterPer teaspoon16 brownies24 brownies
3.5 g (an eighth)700 mg420 mg8.8 mg26 mg each18 mg each

14 g (a half ounce)2,800 mg1,680 mg35 mg105 mg each70 mg each

Even an eighth in a full pan puts nearly two New York servings in every brownie. That is why most bad nights with homemade edibles start with an ordinary recipe and a whole cup of infused butter. If you want 24 pieces at 5 mg each from the 7 gram butter, you need 120 mg in the recipe, which is about 7 teaspoons of infused butter; the rest of the cup can be plain. Our cannabutter guide covers the decarb, the simmer and what to bake.

Why homemade strength is a guess

Not all the THC in the flower ends up in the butter. Some stays in the plant material you strain out, some is not converted during the decarb and some breaks down with heat. Leafly reports that home cooks get about 60% into dairy butter under ideal conditions, that commercial clients who infuse butter find they extracted 40% to 60%, and that one large Washington edibles maker puts the figure closer to 30%. The calculator’s four settings follow that range, with 100% as the ceiling if every milligram made it.

Two more things move the number. Flower labels are tested on a sample, so the jar you bought can differ from the label. And butter that is not stirred well into the batter gives some pieces more than others. The only way to know the strength of a batch is a lab test of the butter. Short of that, start with the lower settings and try a small amount first.

Splitting store-bought edibles

Licensed New York edibles may hold up to 10 mg of THC per serving and 100 mg per package, and the label states both. That makes the math simple: package total divided by pieces gives the THC in each piece. New York’s Office of Cannabis Management edibles guide says 10 mg may be too much for some people and suggests that for some, starting low means 2.5 mg, which can mean cutting an edible into halves or quarters.

Hemp THC drinks and gummies sold outside dispensaries follow different, much lower limits, and federal rules change on Dec 11, 2026. See THC drinks in NYC after December 11. To buy licensed edibles, use our map of licensed NYC dispensaries and check any shop with the license checker.

How long edibles take

Eaten THC is processed by the liver, so it arrives slowly and can feel stronger than the same amount smoked. The NYC Health Department says it can take up to four hours to feel the full effect of an edible. The calculator cannot tell you when to take more; the common mistake is deciding the first piece did not work and eating a second one an hour later. Keep edibles labeled and locked away from children and pets. If a child eats one, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222, or 911 in an emergency.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate the THC in homemade edibles?

Multiply the grams of flower by the THC percent on the label and by 10 to get milligrams in the flower. Multiply that by how much reaches the butter, about 60% at best for a home batch. Divide by the teaspoons of butter for the strength per teaspoon, or by the number of pieces for the strength per piece. Seven grams of 20% flower in one cup of butter and 24 brownies comes to about 35 mg a brownie.

How much THC gets into cannabutter?

Less than the flower holds. Leafly reports about 60% under ideal conditions for dairy butter, 40% to 60% for commercial clients who infuse butter, and close to 30% according to one large Washington edibles maker. Only a lab test of your butter gives the real figure.

How many milligrams is one serving of an edible in New York?

Licensed New York edibles may hold up to 10 mg of THC per serving and 100 mg per package. The state's edibles guide says 10 mg may be too much for some people and that starting low can mean 2.5 mg, a quarter of a 10 mg piece.

How long do edibles take to kick in?

Edibles are slow. The NYC Health Department says it can take up to four hours to feel the full effect. Most bad experiences start with someone eating a second piece because the first one seemed not to work.

Do I need to convert THCA to THC?

Not if the label lists total THC, which New York labels do; that figure already counts THCA at the rate it converts. If a label gives only THCA, multiply it by 0.877. The calculator has a checkbox for this.

How do I get 5 mg from a 100 mg chocolate bar?

Divide 100 mg by 5 mg: the bar holds 20 doses of 5 mg. If it has 10 squares, each square is 10 mg, so half a square is 5 mg and a quarter square is 2.5 mg.
