Where Gorilla Glue comes from

GG Strains, founded in Las Vegas by two growers known as Joesy Whales and Lone Watty, lists the cross as Sour Dubb x Chem’s Sister x Chocolate Diesel on its Leafly product page. The story usually told is that a Chem’s Sister plant turned hermaphrodite and pollinated a Sour Dubb, and that the surviving seeds were later crossed with Chocolate Diesel; the breeders’ own listing does not spell that out. All three parents come from the Chem and Diesel family, which makes GG4 a cousin of New York’s Sour Diesel.

The strain won quickly. GG Strains lists first place at the 2014 Michigan and Los Angeles High Times Cannabis Cups and first at the 2015 High Times World Cup in Jamaica. According to Cannabis Business Times, Joesy Whales, whose real name was Don Peabody, died in 2020 at 66.

Why the name changed

In March 2017 Gorilla Glue Co., the Ohio adhesive company, sued GG Strains for trademark infringement in federal court in Cincinnati. The two sides settled that year. As Cannabis Business Times reported, GG Strains renamed its plants as of Sept 19, 2017: GG4 became “GG4 / Original Glue,” GG5 became “New Glue” and GG1 became “Sister Glue.” The old name never left the street or the menus. Most NYC shops still list it as Gorilla Glue, so search for both names.

Aroma, flavor and terpenes

Leafly’s flavor tags are pungent, earthy, pine and sour, and the Chem and Diesel parents give it a sharp fuel note. Leafly lists caryophyllene as the dominant terpene, then myrcene and limonene. A lab profile GG Strains shared with Cannabis Business Times in 2019 showed caryophyllene and myrcene highest, moderate humulene, limonene and pinene, and 14.3 mg/g of total terpenes.

THC and effects

Leafly lists about 20% THC. NYC labels ran from 21% to 35%. The plant is famous for the sticky resin that gave it the name.

Across more than 5,500 Leafly ratings, the most common tags are relaxed, sleepy and hungry, so it is usually treated as an evening strain. The most reported downsides are dry mouth, dry eyes and anxiety. Those are consumer reports, not predictions. Our THC calculator turns a label percentage into milligrams per serving.

Is Gorilla Glue legal in New York?

Yes, for adults 21 and over, from a licensed dispensary or licensed delivery service (Office of Cannabis Management). The change of name came out of a trademark dispute with the glue maker and has nothing to do with whether you can buy it; labels may say Gorilla Glue, Gorilla Glue #4 or GG4. Adults can carry up to 3 ounces of flower.

Licensed stores display the state’s QR verification code, and the state verification page or our license checker will confirm a store is licensed. Taxes, public smoking, home growing and travel rules are in our New York cannabis rules.

Gorilla Glue in the news

The settlement made national cannabis news. High Times reported on Oct 5, 2017, in “Gorilla Glue and Cannabis Company Reach Settlement” by Maureen Meehan, that GG Strains and its licensees agreed to stop using the Gorilla Glue name and gorilla imagery. No money changed hands, but co-founder Ross Johnson put the cost of the fight and the rebrand at about $250,000.
