Permanent Marker is an indica-leaning hybrid from Seed Junky Genetics, a cross of Biscotti, Sherb Bx and Jealousy, and it smells like its name. Leafly named it Strain of the Year for 2023. On Oct 17, 2026 it was on 17 of the 32 licensed NYC dispensary menus we read, tied with Gorilla Glue for the third most stocked strain in the city, at $26.55 to $55 per eighth with 22% to 34% THC on the labels.

Where Permanent Marker comes from
Permanent Marker is a second-generation Seed Junky hit. The breeder, known as JBeezy, crossed a Biscotti S1 with Sherb Bx1 and then with Jealousy F2, the strain that won Leafly’s award a year earlier; our Jealousy guide covers that parent. The Doja Pak team selected the plant, and the Los Angeles brand Doja Exclusive released it in 2022 after earlier runs under the names “Adios MF” and “Gunnpowwder.”
Demand ran ahead of supply. According to Leafly’s award write-up, clones sold for $1,000 in January 2022, and feminized seeds did not come out until May 2023. Leafly’s menu data showed it growing from 10 stores in August 2022 to 587 by November 2023, and the award gave Seed Junky a second straight win.
Aroma, flavor and terpenes
The name is a description. Leafly’s top flavor tags are ammonia, chemical and tobacco, and reviewers describe the smell of a fresh marker, with floral, soapy, candy and gassy notes underneath. Leafly’s award piece adds grape candy, creamy berry and a solvent edge. Leafly lists myrcene as the dominant terpene, then limonene and caryophyllene.
THC and effects
Leafly lists about 25% THC and says it regularly tests between 25% and 30%. NYC labels ran from 22% to 34%, which puts it among the stronger strains on city shelves.
Leafly reviewers most often tag it tingly, relaxed and euphoric, and the award announcement describes effects that lean sedating. The most reported downsides are anxiety, headache and dry eyes. Those are consumer reports, not predictions, and flower in the high 20s and 30s is a lot for anyone who does not consume often. Start small and wait. Our THC calculator turns a label percentage into milligrams per serving.

Is Permanent Marker legal in New York?
Yes, for adults 21 and over, from a licensed dispensary or licensed delivery service (Office of Cannabis Management). It is also one of the easiest strains to buy legally in the city: on Oct 17, 2026 it was on 17 of the 32 licensed menus we read, so there is little reason to buy it anywhere else. Adults can carry up to 3 ounces of flower.
To confirm a shop is licensed, look for the state’s QR verification code by the door, or check the address on the state verification page or with our license checker. For everything else, including smoking in public, taxes and travel, see our New York cannabis rules.
Permanent Marker in the news
Leafly announced the award on Dec 5, 2023 in “Sniff away, America: Permanent Marker wins Leafly Strain of the Year 2023” by David Downs. The piece explains the pick: menu data showing the strain’s spread from 10 stores to 587 in about 15 months, and budtenders naming it the new strain they recommended most. It was Leafly’s fifth annual award and Seed Junky’s second straight win, after Jealousy in 2022.
